چکیده

In this review of recent advances in the sub-specialty, we briefly discuss the current understanding of causes, presentations and evidence-based treatment of the most common disorders seen in clinical neuropsychiatry. Traumatic and acquired brain injury, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s and Huntington’s disease, sleep disorders and delirium are all considered, focusing on the most contentious issues and practical approaches to management and treatment. Mike Dilley is a specialist registrar in neuropsychiatry at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, London (Department of Neuropsychiatry, Box 15, Queen Square, London WC1N 3BG, UK. E-mail: [email protected]). His research interests include neuroimaging the neural correlates of ruminative thinking and conversion disorders. Simon Fleminger is a consultant neuropsychiatrist on the Lishman Brain Injury Unit, Maudsley Hospital, and the Brain Injury Rehabilitation Unit, Edgware Hospital, London. He is also an honorary senior lecturer at the Institute of Psychiatry, London. His research interests include traumatic and anoxic brain injury.

Neuroprotective Effects of Exercise on Brain Edema and Neurological Movement Disorders Following the Cerebral Ischemia and Reperfusion in Rats

Introduction: Cerebral ischemia and reperfusion causes physiological and biochemical changes in the neuronal cells that will eventually lead to cell damage. Evidence indicates that exercise reduces the ischemia and reperfusion-induced brain damages in animal models of stroke. In the present study, the effect of exercise preconditioning on brain edema and neurological movement disorders followin...

Pre-Ischemic Treatment of Pentoxifylline Reduces Infarct Volumes in Transient Focal Cerebral Ischemia in the Rat

Background: Pentoxifylline (PTX) is used in human for intermittent claudication and cerebral vascular disorders including cerebrovascular dementia. It also inhibits the synthesis of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), which is believed to be neurotoxic in animal models of cerebral ischemia. The objective of this study was to examine the role of PTX on ischemia/reperfusion injures in rat model of t...

Cerebrovascular Disease (Dr

Ischemia or hemorrhage are the byproducts of cerebrovascular disease, manifest as sudden, focal neurological deficits related to specific vascular territories of the central nervous system. Impairment or loss of consciousness is a global deficit, which rarely is caused by simultaneous, extensive or multiple hemorrhages or ischemic infarctions, and is more commonly due to other causes such as ce...

Headache with focal neurological signs or symptoms: a complicated differential diagnosis.

Headache syndromes can be associated with focal neurological symptoms or signs. Good knowledge of primary headaches, a detailed history and a thorough clinical examination are prerequisites for their differential diagnosis. The neurological symptoms produced by the migraine aura are the most characteristic and recognisable. However, structural lesions, such as vascular malformations, can produc...

Effect of pentoxifylline on brain edema in a rat model of transient focal cerebral ischemia

Pervious studies have shown that pentoxifylline (PTX) has beneficial effects in reduction of stroke and brain trauma injuries in experimental animals. However, there is very little and controversial information about the effect of PTX on brain edema in cerebral ischemia. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the effects of different doses of PTX on brain edema and neurological m...

Evaluation the protective effect of aminoguanidine on cortex and striatum damage in acute phase of focal cerebral ischemia in rat

Introduction: Several studies have indicated that late treatment of aminoguanidine (AG) reduces cerebral ischemic injuries in animal models. However, the effects of early treatment of AG on cerebral ischemic damage are not well understood. This study was designed to evaluate effect of early treatment of AG on cortex and striatum injuries as well as neurological dysfunctions in transient mode...
